On Wednesday 4 December, the European Union expressed its deep concern in a press release issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS) following the Taliban’s order to private and public educational establishments in Afghanistan to suspend all medical training for women and girls.
“Women’s participation in education and in the workforce is not just a matter of equality - it is essential for the self-sufficiency, development, and prosperity of any nation”, the statement said.
According to the EU, one of the consequences of this decision will be to worsen the humanitarian crisis in the country and exacerbate the suffering of its people.
The statement, which follows a series of previous appeals in response to violations of women’s rights (see EUROPE 13468/5), calls on the Taliban to reverse this discriminatory policy and to respect the regime’s commitments under international law, “including ensuring equal access to education and to basic healthcare for all Afghans”.
Finally, the EU reiterates its determination to support women and girls, and all those whose rights are constantly violated in Afghanistan. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
