On Monday 14 October, the European Commission launched a four-week call for comments on the draft delegated act updating the rules governing the Union Database on Biofuels (UDB).
The aim is to improve data traceability throughout the supply chain.
The UDB was established under the 2018 Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001/EU) to reduce the risk of irregularities and double counting of energy units and to ensure that “only sustainable volumes of renewable fuels and recycled carbon fuels are counted for the achievement of the EU decarbonisation targets”.
The revised 2023 Renewable Energy Directive (EU/2023/2413) authorises the European Commission to extend the scope of UDB data to also cover “data from the point of production/collection of the raw materials used to produce biofuels”.
Following this call for contributions, the Commission will finalise the draft act and submit it to the EU Council and the European Parliament by the end of the year.
