On Monday 13 May, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, denounced the “indiscriminate attacks” by the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the town of El Fasher, in the Darfur region of Sudan.
In recent days, the United Nations has reported the use of heavy weapons in densely populated areas, causing dozens of casualties. Aerial bombardments to the east and north of El Fasher were also reported by AFP on Tuesday.
In a statement issued by the EU’s European External Action Service, Mr Borrell and Mr Lenarčič condemned the attack on the Babiker Naharse Paediatric Hospital.
“We remain committed to ensure that those who commit atrocities, those in leadership who obstruct the delivery of humanitarian aid and fail in their obligations to protect the civilians will be held accountable for their actions”, they reiterated (see EUROPE 13402/36).
According to the UN, only 39 humanitarian trucks reached El Fasher in 2024. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
