EU extends EUTM Mozambique’s mandate and adapts mission’s strategic objectives

On Tuesday, 14 May, the Council of the EU decided to extend the mandate of the EU Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM Mozambique) until 30 June 2026, with a budget allocation of over €14 million for this period.

In a press release, the Council of the EU announced that it had also decided to adapt the mission’s strategic objectives to new circumstances—favouring its transition from a training model to an assistance model “combining advising, mentoring and specialised training in support of the units of the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of the Mozambican armed forces”.

In order to take these changes into account, the mission will be renamed the ‘EU Military Assistance Mission Mozambique’ (EUMAM Mozambique) as of 1 September 2024.

EUTM Mozambique was established in July 2021 with the aim of training and supporting the Mozambican armed forces in protecting the civilian population as well as restoring safety and security in the Cabo Delgado province (see EUROPE 12813/10). (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
