Slovenia’s Marko Bošnjak elected new President of European Court of Human Rights

Elected on Monday 13 May as the new President of the European Court of Human Rights, Slovenian judge Marko Bošnjak will assume his duties on 2 July, succeeding Irish judge Síofra O'Leary, who became the first woman to hold the position following her election in September 2022.

Born in 1974, Marko Bošnjak is a graduate of the University of Ljubljana, where he spent his career before being elected to the Strasbourg Court in 2016.

He was Vice-President of Section between 2019 and 2021, President of Section since 1 January 2022 and Vice-President of the Court since 1 November 2022.

The term of office has not been specified.

By statute, the term of office is a maximum of three years, but the Rules of Court also stipulate that judges may not serve more than nine years in Strasbourg.

Elected in 2016, Judge Bošnjak’s term of office is due to end in 2025. (Original version in French by Véronique Leblanc)
