14/05/24 (Agence Europe) – The EU’s industrial sector is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels, which account for 50.5% of final energy consumption in industry in 2022, according to Eurostat in a publication dated 13 May. Electricity and gas lead the way, accounting for almost two-thirds (64.5%) of the final energy consumption of the EU’s industrial sector in the same year. Electricity (33.3%) and natural gas (31.2%) are followed by oil and oil products (10.8%), renewable energies and biofuels (10.6%), heat (5.6%), solid fossil fuels (6.3%) and non-renewable waste (2.1%). The chemical and petrochemical sector is the largest final consumer of energy, accounting for a fifth of total industrial consumption (1,892 petajoules, or 20.0%).
