In a joint letter published on Monday 13 May, SolarPower Europe, the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE), the European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF), the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), Ocean Energy Europe and WindEurope called on the European Commission to implement the ‘European Green Deal’ and unlock the necessary funding, in particular by reviewing the design of the ‘Innovation Fund’.
They are calling for €813 billion to be unlocked per year annually, in particular for investment in renewable energy technologies.
The associations are particularly concerned that the EU’s ‘Innovation Fund’ does not currently provide sufficient support for projects based on renewable energies and energy storage (36% of projects), whereas around 64% of projects fall into the categories of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and energy-intensive industries.
They are therefore calling for a rethink of the design of the ‘Innovation Fund’ so that it comprises two separate calls for projects to promote renewable energy technologies - one for carbon capture technologies and the other for renewable technologies and energy storage - “which genuinely reduce carbon emissions”.
