On the occasion of its 30th anniversary and ahead of the next parliamentary term, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Parliament pledged on Tuesday 14 May to strengthen their institutional partnership.
The CoR President, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, have signed a revised cooperation agreement (the agreement dates from the end of February) to support their joint efforts to strengthen European democracy and identify new avenues for cooperation to take better account of the views of local and regional authorities in the EU legislative cycle.
Particular emphasis will be on cooperation in the EU decision-making process (political dialogue with the President of the Parliament and MEPs at CoR plenary sessions) and the CoR’s contribution to Parliament’s work (expertise from local and regional authorities, participation of parliamentary rapporteurs in regional parliament meetings), and on improving cooperation in communication activities on key policy initiatives and legislation.
