In a study published on Tuesday 14 May, Kenneth Haar, a researcher and campaigner with the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO), shows the links between ultra-conservative American foundations and the radical right across the EU in the run-up to the European elections.
The Alliance Defending Freedom, well known for its role in the fight against federal abortion rights in the United States, is a particular focus of the report entitled ‘The Alliance Attacking Freedom’. According to the CEO, this right-wing Christian organisation has, over the years, worked to establish a transatlantic conservative network, via its five European offices, against sexual and reproductive health rights and LGBTQI+ rights.
The Observatory also condemns pressure on parliaments and international institutions, including the European Parliament, to create far-right coalitions within the EU, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. Kenneth Haar’s report shows that American Christian foundations, especially those close to former US President Donald Trump (Republican), have considerably increased their subsidies in Europe. A conservative and far-right coalition at the end of the European elections would therefore present the risk of a Trumpist influence.
