EU fears military operations in Darfur would have “devastating consequences

30/04/24 (Agence Europe)On Monday, 29 April, the European Union urged the warring parties in the conflict in Sudan (see EUROPE 13396/3), namely the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), to refrain from attacking the city of El Fasher (in Darfur) and its surrounding area. “Fighting in the area would have devastating consequences. Recently, villages have been scorched to the ground by the Rapid Support Forces in a likely ethnic cleansing campaign against the Zaghawa tribe, while indiscriminate aerial bombardments by the Sudanese Armed Forces resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians”, indicated High Representative of the Union Josep Borrell in a statement. He also warned that the EU would sanction “those who perpetuate instability and insecurity and obstruct the delivery of humanitarian aid”. (BD)
