EU calls on Burkina Faso authorities to conduct an independent investigation into massacre of civilians in north of country

30/04/24 (Agence Europe)On Monday 29 April, the European Union called on the transitional authorities in Burkina Faso to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into a massacre of civilians reported by Human Rights Watch in two towns in the north of the country. An NGO report published on Thursday 25 April accused the Burkinabe army, which is confronted with armed jihadist groups, of having “executed at least 223 civilians, including at least 56 children, in two villages on 25 February”. In response to these “unfounded accusations”, Burkina Faso has in recent days suspended the broadcasting of several foreign media for “disinformation likely to discredit the Burkinabe army”, AFP reported on Tuesday. In a statement issued by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU regretted this decision, in the name of freedom of expression and the right to information. (BD)
