The NGO network Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe has issued recommendations for improving the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) of 18 EU Member States in order to meet the 30 June deadline. The aim of this opinion is to speed up climate action and the energy transition, in line with the commitments of the Paris Agreement and the EU’s climate objectives for 2030.
The countries concerned are Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.
For example, Belgium is being encouraged to adopt a Special Climate Law, while Bulgaria should focus on decarbonising its heating sector and Croatia on financing its energy policies.
This report follows the assessments of the European Commission and the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change, which consider current efforts insufficient to achieve climate neutrality according to the trajectory set by the EU, and call for immediate action.
