At the eighth conference entitled “Supporting the future of Syria and the region”, which took place on Tuesday 30 April in Brussels, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, reaffirmed the European Union’s unwavering commitment to the Syrian people, who have been plunged into a devastating civil war for thirteen years.
Mr Lenarčič identified three crucial areas for action: respect for international humanitarian law, the need for a long-term vision including the reconstruction of the country, and the need for increased financial support.
“The fabric of Syrian society is falling apart. With over 70% of Syrians requiring humanitarian aid (...) we urgently need more funding from more donors”, stressed the European Commissioner on Tuesday.
Since the start of the conflict in 2011, the EU and its Member States have mobilised more than €30 billion to fund humanitarian aid, stabilisation and resilience in the country. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
