On Monday 22 April, the foreign and defence ministers of the 27 European Union countries examined ways of strengthening cooperation with the United Nations in Sudan, where a bloody conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced 8.5 million people and caused a serious food crisis (see EUROPE 13391/2).
The UN Special Envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, presented an overview of the situation to the European ministers meeting at the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg. The ministers then held a single round-table discussion.
“We want to focus on cooperation within the framework of various mediation initiatives”, said the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, at a press conference on Monday afternoon, without announcing any significant decision.
