FATF member states ministers pledge to step up their efforts

The Ministers of the member states of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the fight against financial crime in a statement issued on Thursday 18 April at their biennial meeting in Washington.

They fully support the FATF as the global standard-setting body for preventing and combatting money laundering, terrorist financing and the financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. “Depriving criminals of their ill-gotten gains is crucial to fighting the scourge of money laundering and financial crime”, said Singapore’s T. Raja Kumar, President of the FATF, during the meeting.

Ministers noted that despite the significant progress made, there are still gaps in effective implementation of the FATF Standards. They undertook to remedy the situation rapidly and considered that further efforts were needed on supervision and preventive measures, beneficial ownership transparency, investigating and prosecuting money laundering and confiscating the proceeds of crime.

The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to helping jurisdictions implement the necessary tools to protect the financial system and the broader economy from the threats of illicit finance. The Ministers also undertook to apply the FATF Standards fully, promptly and effectively and to hold all member countries accountable if they fail to do so. The next meeting will be held in April 2026.
