Belgian and Dutch foreign ministers call for additional sanctions against violent settlers

22/04/24 (Agence Europe)While the EU sanctioned four violent settlers and two entities on Friday 19 April (see EUROPE 13395/3), the foreign ministers of Belgium, Hadja Lahbib, and the Netherlands, Hanke Bruins Slot, called on the EU to go further. “We need to look very closely at who else can be put on this list so that Palestinians are no longer stripped of their possessions and driven from their own properties”, said Ms Bruins Slot. Ms Lahbib believes that “punishing the violent settlers is not enough, we must also punish those who arm and defend (them), and therefore touch on the entire system”. According to the EU High Representative, although a package of sanctions has just been adopted, “in the West Bank, attacks against Palestinians are also on the increase. We need to re-examine sanctions against violent settlers”. (CG and BD)
