On Thursday 18 April, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), the European body responsible for monitoring the application of the GDPR regulations governing the processing of personal data in the European Union, published its priorities for the first 3 years after the European elections (2024-2027).
The EDPB is keen to ensure that its prerogatives can be aligned with the implementation of new regulations, in particular the Artificial Intelligence Act and the European Data Strategy, and has identified four key priorities for the coming years, with “cooperation” and “harmonisation” as the common threads.
For the EDPB, the emphasis should be on “interaction with the new digital regulatory framework”, by strengthening cooperation with the European national regulatory authorities.
In particular, the body cites the two new digital laws, the DMA and the DSA, which “have an impact on data protection and privacy”, and of which the implementation must be able to tie in with the GDPR.
The European Board hopes to achieve its objectives by advancing the harmonisation of the procedural rules of the ‘GDPR’ regulation at EU level, and by working towards better data protection at international level.
