22/04/24 (Agence Europe) – On Saturday 20 April, the United Kingdom reportedly rejected the European Commission’s proposal to reactivate the mobility of young people between the EU and the UK, which has been thrown into disarray by Brexit. The recommendation published 2 days earlier (see EUROPE 13394/25) envisaged an agreement allowing young people aged between 18 and 30 from both regions to stay for up to 4 years in the host country. However, Downing Street told AFP that the EU-wide mobility scheme would not be reintroduced, claiming that free movement had ended. However, the British government remains open to the conclusion of bilateral agreements promoting the skills of young people, having already established similar agreements with 13 countries, including Australia and New Zealand.
