Commission wants to make it easier for 18-30 year olds to move between European Union and United Kingdom

Will it soon be easier for young Europeans to study, work and live in the UK? This is the ambition of the European Commission, which suggested to the EU Council on Thursday 18 April opening negotiations to facilitate the mobility of 18-30 year-olds between the European Community and its former member, in both directions.

And for good reason: the UK’s exit from the EU has limited exchanges, which has had a negative impact both on the cultural and educational openness of younger generations and on their opportunities in the fields of training and research.

Faced with these challenges, the proposal aims to simplify travel and lengthen stays on both sides of the Channel. It defines a set of conditions (age, maximum length of stay, eligibility, rules for checking compliance) to enable people to travel without being tied to a target or subject to quotas. Young EU and UK citizens could stay in their destination country for up to 4 years.

The recommendation must now be discussed by the EU Council, to determine whether negotiations can be launched by the Commission.
