Th European Commission published, on Thursday 18 April, a toolkit to “assist policy-makers at national, regional and local level to make better use of EU funds to invest in social housing and the services that go with it”, according to a press release.
Affordable and decent housing “has a positive impact on social inclusion and on people’s participation in education and the labour market”, but “has become a challenge for many citizens”.
According to Eurostat, house prices in the EU rose by 47.9% between 2010 and the fourth quarter of 2023, and rental prices increased by 22.8%. In 2022, almost one person in ten in the EU will live in a household where the total cost of housing represents more than 40% of their income.
The Commission explains how different funds – such as the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+), the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF) – can support housing policies. In particular, the RRF can provide €15 billion for this purpose.
