On Tuesday 7 May, the European Commission approved an implementing regulation updating Member States’ reporting templates for climate action data.
These updated templates relate to Member States’ reports on the use of revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), national emissions under the Effort Sharing Regulation and national emissions and removals under the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation.
The data collected is used to feed into the annual progress report on EU climate action and to help the Commission assess whether Member States are on track to meet their climate targets.
The Commission also points out that Member States can report carbon removals linked to bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (bio-CCS), but that these cannot be counted towards emission reduction targets, as they are not regulated by EU climate legislation.
