08/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 8 May, the new United Nations envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, called on the Cypriot leaders to resume peace talks. During her visit to the island, she met the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and then the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Ersin Tatar. “I have the impression that everyone wants to move forward and that something is happening on the island”, stressed Ms Holguín Cuéllar, hoping that the leaders would listen to their citizens. “The common ground lies in civil society, but we must address the leaders and ask them to move forward”, the envoy added. The spokesman for the Republic of Cyprus, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, hoped that “in the next six months, in the immediate future, the resumption of negotiations will become possible”. (CG)
