European Commission requests additional information from social network X in context of DSA

On Wednesday 8 May, the European Commission announced that it had sent an additional request for information to social network X (formerly Twitter) under the Digital Services Regulation (DSA) concerning the reduction in the resources allocated to content moderation on the platform.

In its press release, the European Commission asks the social network why (according to its own statements) it has “reduced its team of content moderators by almost 20%” since the previous report in October 2023, restricted EU language coverage “from 11 to 7 languages”, and whether it has properly analysed the risks posed “by generative AI on electoral processes, the dissemination of illegal content and the protection of fundamental rights”.

In December 2023, the Commission had opened formal proceedings against X to assess whether the platform may have breached the DSA in areas related to risk management, content moderation, transparency of advertising and access to data for researchers (see EUROPE 13316/10).

X must provide the Commission with the information requested concerning content moderation resources and generative AI no later than 17 May and, for the remaining questions, no later than 27 May. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
