20/11/23 (Agence Europe) – On the eve of the vote on the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) (see EUROPE 13279/13), the environmental organisations CAN Europe, WWF Europe, the European Federation for Transport and Environment and the European Environmental Bureau, in a joint statement published on Monday 20 November, reiterate the importance of this regulation for achieving the EU’s 2030 climate targets. These organisations focus on a shortlist of strategic ‘net-zero’ technologies, emphasising solutions such as wind and solar power, heat pumps, batteries, grids and renewable hydrogen. They also warn against the inappropriate use of Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS), arguing for its use to be limited to unavoidable emissions and in targeted sectors, so as not to perpetuate dependence on fossil fuels.
