20/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 20 November, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, congratulated the new Argentine President, Javier Milei, who was elected the previous day following “democratic” elections. Emphasising the “close” relations “based on shared values”, he assured Mr Milei that Argentina could count on the EU to strengthen the bilateral partnership, “including by finalising negotiations as soon as possible on the EU-Mercosur Association Agreement”, in a press release. In a similar vein to American President Donald Trump and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro, the ultraliberal Javier Milei won more than 55% of the vote against the Peronist candidate, Sergio Massa. He promises an end to “decadence” and to revive the country, which is in the grip of a chronic economic crisis marked by rampant inflation, and is critical of the EU-Mercosur agreement. (MB)
