28/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The finances of local and regional authorities are facing severe pressure due to the pandemic, in particular due to the lack of long-term support from national governments, according to a study published by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) on Thursday 28 October. Definitive estimates of additional spending by local and regional governments in 2020 range from €5 million to €10 billion, with a primary focus on social assistance and purchases of protective equipment. National governments provided an average of €2.9 billion in short-term support within each country. 60% of respondents said that national support is still insufficient to offset long-term budget deficits. The financial situation was also highlighted by the European Committee of the Regions in a recent study (see EUROPE 12811/12). To consult the study: https://bit.ly/3BlOR2k (PH)
