MEPs reiterate call for legal channels for economic migration

Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) adopted by 50 votes to 14 with 2 abstentions on Wednesday 27 October an own-initiative report by Sweden’s Abir Al-Sahlani (Renew Europe) on new legal channels for migration, including economic migration to the EU.

This report, very similar to a report on the subject by Sylvie Guillaume (S&D, France), calls on the Commission to propose legislative initiatives on labour migration by 31 January 2022 (see EUROPE 12723/15).

The report reiterates the call for the creation of a European talent pool and a platform that matches the profile of candidates with the needs of employers in the EU. This is also what the Commission has promised with its proposals on ‘talent partnerships’, which it will specify at the end of this year.

MEPs also call on the Commission to put in place “an ambitious admission scheme for low- and medium-skilled third country workers, also addressing the need to have skills and qualifications from outside the EU properly recognised”, says a statement. They also ask the institution to work on a five-year multiple entry visa for the self-employed and entrepreneurs.
