02/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 2 June, Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi announced that the negotiating framework for the accession of Albania and North Macedonia to the EU is expected to be presented next week. “The negotiating framework is expected to arrive in June, in a few days in fact. We would like for it to be on the Council table next week”, he told the media. This framework contains the rules that are going to govern negotiations with countries, and its adoption requires unanimity in the Council. He also confirmed that the ‘enlargement’ package, with the countries’ progress reports, will be presented in the early autumn (see EUROPE 12490/30). Furthermore, Mr Várhelyi hoped that the Albanian political parties would reach an agreement on electoral reform in the coming hours, if not days—even though the deadline had been set as 30 May. (CG)
