All airlines certified in Armenia now banned from European skies

The European Commission updated the EU aviation safety list on Tuesday 2 June. 96 airlines that do not meet international safety standards are now subject to an operating ban or restrictions in the European Union.

Six of these companies have registered “serious safety deficiencies”, the Commission says. These are Avior Airlines (Venezuela), Blue Wing Airlines (Suriname), Iran Aseman Airlines (Iran), Iraqi Airways (Iraq), Med-View Airlines (Nigeria) and Air Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe).

The other 90 companies are certified in States whose aviation authorities are, in the view of the EU, insufficiently safety supervised.

This is now the case in Armenia: all companies certified there have been added to the list, following a new assessment of the country’s security monitoring capacity.

Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean said the decision was taken on the basis of the unanimous opinion of Member States' aviation safety experts and assured that the EU was ready to “cooperate and invest in Armenia to improve its aviation safety”.

In addition, three airlines – Air Service Comores (Comoros), Iran Air (Iran) and Air Koryo (North Korea) – are subject to operational restrictions and can only fly to the EU with specific aircraft.
