The European Commission published a report on Tuesday 2 June identifying a series of 20 best practices to address risks in the energy sector in the event of a pandemic like Covid-19.
Among these, the report mentions in particular the fact that all players in the sector should coordinate and share information through coordination groups and other existing communication platforms.
The paper also calls for sound risk preparedness plans, maintaining the free movement of skilled energy workers, or maintaining supply to vulnerable customers by monitoring the situation of low-income households or adopting moratoriums on power cuts for households and small businesses in arrears.
While the energy system has shown resilience to date, "it is important to remain vigilant, as the nature of pandemic risk in the energy field is fundamentally new and adds new constraints", the paper concludes.
