02/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – The French Ministry of Research announced on Saturday 30 May that it had selected Toulouse as a candidate city to host the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The organisation conducts research and produces weather forecasts that are sent to Member States. It has one of the largest supercomputers in Europe and currently employs around 360 people. The ECMWF is currently based in Reading, England, but is required to leave the UK because of Brexit. Toulouse is the “European capital of aeronautics and space, the headquarters of Météo France and a major European research centre”, said Carole Delga, the President of Occitanie. Other candidate cities include Madrid, Bologna, Potsdam and Vienna. The final decision is expected to be announced in December. (AC)
