Over 700 personalities and climate activists call for a Green European Recovery Plan

More than 700 young activists, climate scientists, trade unionists, economists, entrepreneurs and politicians from all 27 EU Member States called on Tuesday 2 June for a green recovery plan to finance an ecological and just transition.

In order to win the climate battle, we solemnly call on you to include, as one of the main pillars of the recovery plan that you have announced, credible solutions to finance a real Green Deal”, they wrote in their appeal.

In their view, three measures would mobilise sufficient resources to finance a just transition.

Firstly, they call for a ban on all investment and subsidies in the field of fossil fuels, estimating that this would free up more than €112 billion a year.

Second proposal: directing the billions of euros that the ECB is going to create as part of its quantitative easing policy towards climate and employment, in particular to “feed a real Climate and Biodiversity Bank” which would make it possible to mobilise €300 billion per year in the form of interest-free loans granted to Member States.

Finally, they advocate the creation of a 5% European tax on the profits of large companies. Combined with other own resources, this tax would bring in €100 billion a year to feed “a real EU Climate-Biodiversity Budget”.

To date, this appeal has already been signed by more than one million citizens.
