The European Court of Auditors will develop its 2020 work programme according to the Covid-19 pandemic. It announced on Thursday 28 May that it would work on two new reports, one on the European public health response and the other on the European Union's economic response to the coronavirus.
On the public health response, the Court, which reports “tensions” between EU competences and public expectations, will focus on the actions taken and resources mobilised by the European Commission and EU agencies to protect the population.
The second new report will review the measures and challenges inherent in the initiatives taken by the EU and the Member States to tackle the economic paralysis caused by the pandemic. A mapping of risks and opportunities for the future of economic and budgetary coordination at European level will be carried out.
In order not to overburden public administrations at European and national level, which are still operating in crisis mode, the European Court of Auditors has decided to postpone four reports.
The work that remains the highest priority is: plastic waste management, digitisation of European industry, State Aid to the banking sector, exchange of tax information, ‘better lawmaking’ and EU/Asia cooperation.
The Court will present a report on the contribution of the agricultural sector to the preservation of biodiversity on Friday 5 June.
