25/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 24 January, a large majority of the members of the European Parliament’s committee on the environment adopted (52 votes to 6 with 1 abstention) the interinstitutional agreement on the “Lulucf” regulation relating to the contribution by forestry and farming to the EU’s climate goals for the period 2021-2030 (see EUROPE 11926). Under this agreement, member states must ensure a balance is struck between greenhouse gas emissions and CO2 absorption by forests, cultivated land and pastureland over two periods (2021-2025 and 2026-2030). Wetlands are included in the accounting rules established by the draft regulation. If absorption exceeds emissions during the first period, the credit could be placed in reserve and used during the second period. Parliament is to vote on this in early February. (AN)
