On Tuesday 23 January, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service called on the Libyan actors to rally together to reach a sustainable solution to the crisis in the country at a time when a double attack with a booby-trapped car the same day claimed at least 33 lives and threatened "in an already fragile environment, the ongoing work to restore security, stability and rule of law in Libya".
"The European Union expects all legitimate Libyan actors to rally together towards this goal (Ed: of a sustainable solution to the crisis), showing willingness to compromise and by putting the interests of the Libyan people first", the spokesperson said in a press release, adding that "all Libyans deserve to live in peace and security".
The spokesperson reiterated that the EU continues to work with the UN special representative, Ghassan Salamé, for this solution, and underlined the EU's engagement and support to the inclusive mediation process led by Salamé.
At the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 22 January, the ministers discussed the situation in Libya, speaking to the EU representative on the ground by videoconference. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
