21/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - It is necessary to point out two things regarding the article on the cost of non-Constitution in EUROPE 9268. As we mentioned, the Chairman of the EP Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Jo Leinen, urges for a slimmer text for the Constitution taking up Parts I and II and only the articles of Part III that have really introduced something new compared to the Nice Treaty. Mr Leinen asks us to underline that he does not therefore support the recent proposal by Nicolas Sarkozy on a “mini treaty” (EUROPE 9261) as, in his view, this would be “cherry picking”. We also point out that, contrary to what was indicated in the same article, the EP has not decided to prepare a report on the political cost of non-Constitution, but that Mr Leinen took the personal initiative to identify these costs in a document that he distributed to journalists during his press conference on 19 September.
