Solana and Larijani may meet next week

Brussels, 21/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On visit to Damascus, Iran's Chief Negotiator on the nuclear issue, Ari Larijani, said on Wednesday that he will be meeting EU High Representative Javier Solana in a European capital next week. Although Mr Solana's cabinet had not confirmed this information on Thursday afternoon, the continued discussion process between the EU and Iran enjoys the “strong support” of the “Six” (EU3 - Germany, France and United Kingdom - China, United States and Russia), Nicholas Burns, number three at the US State Department, said. Meeting in New York on Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the “Six” did not agree on a sanctions programme against Iran but are reported to have agreed on a new deadline for obtaining a response from Tehran on their offer of cooperation. This may be “early October”, according to a French diplomatic source, cited by AFP. “We must have quite a rapid response from the Iranians as it is becoming urgent”, the French Foreign Minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy, said on Wednesday. President Chirac, who suggested to Tehran early in the week that they might be able to agree on “double suspension” as soon as negotiations start (suspension of enrichment by Iran and freeze on UN sanctions approach), refused to set a deadline for Tehran.
