Strasbourg, 28/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 26 September, at the European Languages Day, Alfredo Antoniozzi MEP (Forza Italia) asked the plenary in Strasbourg if “it would not be opportune for the European Parliament to promote…a constructive reform of the language regime at the European institutions?” Mr Antoniozzi noted that they were now “Welcoming our new Romanian and Bulgarian colleagues and that from 1 January 2007, Bulgarian and Romanian will become part of our 'Community's linguistic family' by bringing the 20 official languages up to 22, as well as the semi-official recognition given to Catalan, Basque, Galician and Gaelic”. He added that “the arrival of new languages…which will be part of our daily work does not fill me with joy but the chaos and absence of written rules, as confirmed to me by the European Commission through the voice of Commissioner Figel, worries me enormously. A regime of twenty languages, all official but without written rules at the Commission will be to the advantage of some languages, alas, always the same three…(English, French and German) and does not confer suitable importance to other languages such as Italian, Spanish or Polish, which according to the statistics, deserve more consideration”. Mr Antoniozzi therefore averred, “the European Parliament must present a proposal to unblock the European Commission's inertia on this issue. Thanks to initiatives of this kind, citizens will feel that Europe is closer”.
