Strasbourg, 28/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report of German Christian Democrat Klaus-Heiner Lehne on Tuesday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament has withdrawn the immunity of Cypriot MEP Marios Matsakis (DI.KO) and member of the ALDE. Doctor Matsakis is being investigated in two different affairs. A police officer who accused Matsakis of intent to corrupt, declared to the police that he had noticed carved wooden chests at Matsakis' home, which looked like antiques, a business registered in Cyprus. During the proceedings at the legal affairs committee, Mr Matsakis disputed the General Prosecutor' remit for lifting his immunity. The examination begun by the rapporteur demonstrated that disputing this remit had no legal basis.
