Commission investigates State aid for sugar refinery in Sardinia

Brussels, 08/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission decided to open an investigation in the aid of 3.5 million EUR to the Villasor sugar refinery (Sadam ISZ group) in Sardinia. The aid is aimed to compensate for losses incurred by the refinery further to the drought which hit the island in 2001 and 2002, and which reduced sugar beet production.

The Commission points out that under its State aid policy in the agricultural sector, it authorises compensation to farmers...
