THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey

08/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Elmar Brok MEP (CDU) had advised the Turkish authorities in a press statement to not bank on the European Commission in his report of 6 October recommending accession negotiations with Ankara. He also warned them that they could not claim to be carrying out reforms while paving the way to the "Islamicisation of the country". The MEP has attacked the draft law penalising adultery (EUROPE 7 September p 6) and the intention (attributed by AKP press) of the party of prime minister Erdogan authorising students to wear the veil at university. Brok has also criticised an Independent Commission report presided by Martti Athisaari for not having taken into account the fact that the political criteria of Copenhagen were not actually being translated into reality (EUROPE 7 September pp 7/8).
