08/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The 1997 EU "Television" directive is "fit for a museum", said MEP Ruth Hieronymi (CDU) on Wednesday, during a conference held in Amsterdam by the Dutch Presidency on the subject of state broadcasting in the Member States. Television without borders, and particularly digital technology, she commented (according to a press release), "reinforce the European Commission's position, with its responsibility for economic and competition issues, compared to the responsibilities of the Member States under conventional national legislation on broadcasting". She called upon the Member States to ensure, as provided in the Protocol to the Treaty of Amsterdam on State broadcasting in the Member States, transparent and easily comparable funding of their public broadcasting.
