Bulgaria finalises membership talks after having had to accept strengthened safeguard clause allowing EU to delay accession until 2008 if serious problems arise - Romania may complete negotiations by end of year

Luxembourg, 15/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - After four years of negotiation, Bulgaria successfully completed its membership talks on Tuesday. The last chapters (competition, agriculture, regional policy, budget, miscellaneous) were formally closed during a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg chaired by Brian Cowen with the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Solomon Passy. Bulgaria must now wait for the Commission to make a formal recommendation in Council to conclude the intergovernmental negotiation...
