15/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the Council of the EU gave the go-ahead for a democracy and election support team to be sent to Afghanistan for the general and presidential elections this September. For reasons of security, a complete observation mission cannot be sent, explains the Commission. In its conclusions, the Council calls upon the Commission to see whether this team could be extended for the better supervision of the elections and training of local observers. The Council also voiced its concern at recent murders of international humanitarian staff in Afghanistan, and called for the demobilisation and disarmament of the various factions.
