Commission calls for action against low turnout, and says Eurosceptics will not distort reality

Brussels, 15/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a statement published on Monday after the European elections, the European Commission states that turnout has "stabilised" in the old Member States, with encouraging signs in a few countries such as Italy, the Netherlands and Finland. However, in the new ones, with the "two clear exceptions" of Cyprus and Malta and "two other situations which cannot be described as acceptable" (Latvia and Lithuania), turnout was far from satisfactory.
