Brussels, 19/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - A conference on fighting insecurity in public transport took place on 13 and 14 November in Naples. During the conference, European social partners signed recommendations aimed at developing policies on the prevention of insecurity in public transport (training, the proteciton of installations, equipment and staff, and social mediation). MEP Giovanni Pittella (Democratici di sinistra) suggested setting up a joint social partners/European Parliament working group which could formulate proposals for EU actions aimed at stemming the tide of insecurity. In a press release, the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) calls for measures to be taken against this phenomenon which, it says, puts a brake on the EU's aims of sustainable development, in so far as the lack of security makes public transport less attractive to would-be users.
