Brussels, 19/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Commission launched a communication on Tuesday, entitled "Some key issues of Europe's competitiveness towards an integrated approach", to be examined by the "Competitiveness" Council of 27 November (the aim is to make the Council's work easier). Commissioner Liikanen said: "it is important that competitiveness of industry is highlighted in our decision-making. Today's decision will provide us with a good working method to ensure that the economic impact of our future legislation and policy making will be taken into account". The Commission, which plans to publish a communication on the concrete follow-up to its industrial policy in March 2004, stressed the need for the "Competitiveness" Council's voice to be heard in the other bodies of the Council, and for an impact assessment of national legislation on competitiveness throughout the decision-making process. It also calls upon the Council and Parliament to adopt pending legislative proposals with significant fallout for the business environment (such as the Community patent and pharmaceutical products), and upon the Member States to speed up the implementation of EU legislation, and to evaluate the impact of their national legislation on competitiveness.
