Brussels, 19/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The list of vessels banned from European ports was published in the Official Journal C272 of 13 November. Since entry into force, on 22 July this year, of the new rules on control by the port State (included in the Erika I package on maritime safety), ten vessels will now be refused access to European ports as they have been immobilised on several occasions and are on the black list publsihed in the annual report of the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (aimed at eliminating vessels that do not meet international standards through a harmonised port inspection system). These are bulk carriers (ships carrying bulk products), tankers for chemical and oil products registered in Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon, Cambodia, Panama, Honduras, Saint Vincent & Grenadines (Caribbean), and Turkey. Furthermore, the Commission published as a warning a list of vessels which will be banned from European ports if they are detained one more time for security reasons after 22 July 2003. (This list of vessels - registered in Albania, Algeria, Cambodia, Georgia, Honduras, Democratic Republic of Korea, Lebanon, Romania, Syria, Tonga, Turkey, Marocco, Saint Vincent & Grenadines, Bulgaria, Malta, Cyprus and Panama - can be consulted on: http: //europa.eu.int/comm/transport/maritime/safety/index_en.htm ).
