17/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - During the ELDR Party Congress (see above), Commissioner Frits Bolkestein warned against the risks of weakening the Stability Pact and the delays in application of the Lisbon strategy. He went on to affirm that endless roundtables do not create the growth that Europe needs to face up to the consequences of enlargement. The Commission should reduce its legislative work to focus on monitoring implementation of the legislation and become a watchdog to ensure the internal market functions correctly, a "guard dog able to bark and bite" Mr Bolkestein said. He also reaffirmed that the "opening of markets in telecommunications, postal services, air transport, electricity and gas has been a success". "Prices have fallen. Quality has improved. This fully confirms our political convictions. Today, one million more people work in these sectors compared to the situation before (…). There is no proof that market opening has produced unacceptable results", he added.
