Proceedings launched against some Member States for failing to comply with EU waste management legislation

Brussels, 09/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - On 8 April, the European Commission decided to send Italy a final request to comply with a 30 May 2002 ruling by the European Court of Justice on batteries containing hazardous substances. This request takes the form of a Reasoned Opinion. The Court of Justice ruling found that Italy had failed to adopt the necessary legislation and administrative measures to comply with the 1998 directive on batteries and accumulators.
